Almond Soy: Milking It For All It's Worth

Local lads ALMOND SOY are heading out on their third national tour in support of their great new single 'Apartment', for what promises to be their largest & loosest run of shows yet. Mia Hyde caught up with the band ahead of their hometown launch at The Aardvark on Friday 26 April.

So i have to ask the question on everyone's mind - are you a vegan boy band?

This actually comes up quite often. We’re definitely a boy band, but we see ourselves more as plant-based milk enthusiasts.

What's better- almond milk or soy milk?

Well none of us know how to milk an almond so we tend to stick with the soy.

The 'Avenue' video launch was a huge success. How did you find the experience of creating the song/video and then the public reaction?

The release show was a bunch of fun and we thought it went really well. Making the video was just as fun! It was cool to get some of our supporters on board in the clip. We had a great time filming with our pal Mason Fleming and just spending time with a bunch of friends. It was all going awesome until we caused our keys player (Reg) to just about slip a disc in his back while we were performing a human pyramid. He’s ok now!

Tell us more about your partnership with Beyond Blue for your upcoming 'Apartment' Tour.

We thought our band would be the perfect platform for us to spread awareness about anxiety and depression. We’ve decided to donate a percentage from each of our shows on the tour to Beyond Blue, with an emphasis on the show at The Aardvark, which also has its own donation page run by Beyond Blue. We’re hoping that even if our fans and friends can’t make it to the shows, they can still help us make a difference by donating.

If each member of the band could pick a song that inspires their sound/contribution to Almond Soy, what would it be?

We all listen to similar music, some of the new ones we’ve been working on have been influenced by the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, The 1975 and Tiny Little Houses.

Tiny Little Houses - Milo Tin

Catfish and the Bottlemen - Pacifier

The 1975 - It’s Not Living (If it’s Not With You).

What's your biggest goal for 2019? What are you gearing up for?

We’re currently preparing to record our sophomore EP to be dropped later this year. There’ll be a bunch of shows around Australia to go with it. There’s always a few little surprises along the way!
